This month's meeting of ULU Council was inquorate, once again. This time it deprived Councillors of the chance to discuss the rivetting details of the nature of ULU's future relationship with Imperial College Union should Imperial College go ahead with it's stated intention of leaving the University of London. In other news, there has been no formal report back or discussion on ULU's "Strategic Review". Rumours abound of an extraordinary council in June... Tuesday, April 04, 2006
![]() MARXISTS INFILTRATE KCLSU In Brief: Incoming VP Education & Representation Rajesh “Josh” Joshi denied any association with either the Tories or Liberal Democrats. On his registration with both societies recorded on the Union database he said, “I signed up with both because my mate wanted to keep the Lib Dems ratified and being the good public schoolboy I am, I wanted to go to posh events like the recent Conservative Future gathering at the Carlton Club.” He continued, “Frankly, I’m voting for the Christian People’s Alliance: anything to stop those evil Marxists getting into power!”. LONDON STUDENT SLICE Written by Duncan Williams (also of Birkbeck College!) A BIRKBECK COLLEGE OLD BOY GETS BIOGRAPHY WRITTEN ABOUT HIS LIFE AND 'CRIMES'. Irish author Mary Kenny has just published her long awaited biography on the notorious wartime radio propaganda (or Nazi spin doc!) William 'Lord Haw Haw' Joyce. William Joyce (April 24 1906 - January 3 1946), was the second of two announcers who presented the Lord Haw-Haw program, which was a Nazi propaganda broadcast aimed against Great Britain during World War II. He was born in the United States to Irish parents during the years before Irish independence. However, Joyce, as his father did, identified himself as a Briton. The Joyce family left Ireland for London after the establishment of the Irish Free State. He attended St. Ignatius College from 1915 to 1921, including applying for university Officer Training Corps, and later studied at Birkbeck College of the London University. It was at Birkbeck that Joyce developed an interest in fascism. He was for a period a member of the Conservative Party. Joyce was a prominent member of the British Union of Fascists under Sir Oswald Mosley during the 1930s. He was praised for his power of oratory. However, he left the BUF in 1937 and formed a breakaway organization, the National Socialist League. In late August 1939, shortly before World War II commenced, he and his wife, Margaret, fled to Germany, before British authorities could detain him under Defence Regulation 18b. Joyce became a naturalized German in 1940. Mary Kenny's biography is certainly worth a read. And one wonders if the ever-so, ever-so politically correct Media Faculty at Birkbeck College will be holding any future lectures on this, one of their most infamous old boys, and a man the college once handed a London University degree, at some point in the future? Should be interesting! Wednesday, November 19, 2003
LONDON STUDENT SLICE - The column with bite! By Duncan Williams SOMETHING IN THE HEIR! Reading the national press over the past few weeks, it appears that the age old institution of nepotism is alive and well and even reaching epidemic proportions. Starting earlier this month with the needless coverage of the talentless Oscar Humphries trading in on his father Barry (aka. Dame Edna Everage) to gain himself some column inches. Perhaps the poor wee fella is tired of being mocked by his pals as 'Kenny of Melbourne' and needs a PR boost? But in Tatler? Give me a break! Then James Murdoch securing a top media job thanks to papa Rupert, who needs no PR boost and who now grandly uses a Royal 'we' when answering questions about his empire during interviews. Now to top it all, George Bush Junior is staying at Buckingham Palace, Mecca of all Nepotistic privileges of birth. What is going on ? Is something catching? Or something in the heir? So much for Blair's classless Britain based on achievement rather than family connections. What do others think? Please contact The Slice... Yours faithfully, DUNCAN WILLIAMS NUS Member: 6335 8605 7535 0236 41c Edith Grove, London SW100LB (m) 07960 829 615 Friday, September 12, 2003

The Day The Students Went Mad Catch this documentary on Radio 4 while you can: it's all about a massive demonstration by London students in 1953 when students were told the couldn't have a rag Guy Fawkes demo. One of the rules: "all college rivalry is to be forgotten for the night" |
